maybe get a blister on your little finger

Meet Sean Pohl Bogen, up-and-comming rock star.   Sean is my nephew, so I am "Uncle Pohl" to him.  This is music to my ears; Pohl is my first name.

Sean has had guitar-on-the-brain for a long time now -- fueled by, among other influences, occasional family jam sessions with Mark (his drummer Dad), Al (friend of the family), and myself.    One of the most heartwarming moments:  Sean thanking me for bringing my blue guitar over to play.   Sean may be the only person on the planet who thinks of me as a guitar hero, and that's enough to satisfy my desires for fandom.

Sean has been wanting an electric guitar, and today I got the news (and this picture) that he now has one.   He already earned a blister, and picked the instrument right up the next morning to keep playing.

That's the way ya do it.

Check out the joy on his face.  And the tat on his arm.     Also note that he's holding the guitar in the traditional manner.  This is a big moment because he used to hold his little acoustic guitar backwards, despite being right-hand-dominant.    The pictures make it seem like he's adjusting just fine.

Sean's other passions include big trucks, driving tractors, and doing chores with Grandpa around the farm.   And cake.

I can't wait to go see his new axe.

Sean Pohl is definitely looking forward to the next time his guitar 'idols' come over to play! Perhaps over the long Labor Day weekend?

We went to Guitar Center on Sat. "just to look", and they had this Pee-wee Les Paul in black. (since your last visit, he's been hooked on blue, but availability helped him change his mind back to black) We were going to wait until his b-day in Oct. to give it to him, but he's already been waiting patiently all summer long. So, we decided to go ahead and give it to him early.

The transition to right-hand playing hasn't been too difficult. Basically he needs help strapping the axe on, so he just rolls with how I put it on him. I also got him a beginner DVD to watch, so he'll have plenty of encouragement. It will be cool to see what happens next!

I bet the memory of being in the guitar store will stick with him forever. He must have been very excited by that.

Sadly, I dislocated my shoulder on Saturday, so I may not be putting my arm over my guitar for a while. I certainly won't be lifting my amp. :-/

He's already been saying how he now has a guitar like "Uncle Pohl" and "Mr. Al." Of course, I'll have to get some pictures with the sunglasses and one of the many hats he insists on wearing when playing. Mark didn't mention it, but Sean already watched the first 2-3 lessons on the dvd and then promptly started lecturing me onfrets and tuning knobs. And this from a not-yet-three-year-old!

Way to start him early! Great for his brain and energy.

Not fair! Not Fair! This kid's got horses in the barn, ropes on the wall...why would he want a guitar? *LOL*

Reckon he's fixin' to be a picker 'cause he doesn't beg to ride nor play football and that's ok. I like pickin' and grinnin' music too.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your shoulder. Were you on your bike?

Now, those lyrics I remember!

I have always played air guitar as a lefty, and it's too late to change now.

How on earth did you dislocate your shoulder? Hector hasn't been putting the hurt on you, has he??

Nope: I wasn't on my bike, nor was I injured by the dashing young door-to-door con artist shaman friend of mine. I'm sure he's down in Kansas City by now, perhaps beyond. I like to imagine him walking the straight and narrow, with the tribal drum slung over his shoulder, pounding out rhythms to his new mantra: "i am an independent contractor to a non-charitable organization; i encourage you to read the fine print..."

Sadly, the story about my shoulder is utterly uninteresting, unlike the story of Hector. I merely rolled over in bed, stretching my arm too high, and it popped out.

I'm going to have an orthopedic surgeon tighten that up for me, pronto.

Tonight I went out to the farm and
got to see Sean play with his new
guitar. He showed me the frets,
and talked about some other guitars
he liked. He likes to play along
with Dire Straits. He has good rhythm,
and sings along with Down To The
Waterline and Water Of Love, while
making striking the only open-string
chord that any toddler would know.

It was so cute, and it continued until
Sultans of Swing came on -- at which
time he decided that he wanted to
put on The String Beans. Then he
sang along with a song about needing
a bath and another about two cats
leaving fur all over the house.

What a heart-melting little boy.
