avoca quack-off duck races

Some days one wishes they didn't fill their calendar with other plans. Just got this from a friend at work:

Sorry for the short notice but that is no reason to miss an event such as this:

Saturday Jan 27th is the 27th annual Avoca NE Quack-Off
http://netnebraska.org/extras/nextexit/dreams/quack_03.html

It's the fundraiser for the volunteer firefighters in a small town an hour outside of Lincoln. You show up, Rent a duck (or bring your own ringer) hang out with it for the morning and around noon the racing begins. There is a bar and the town hall serve food and drinks all day and you're free to bring your own food or thermos of coffee, if you want to add something to chase the chill from your bones, feel free, the liquor laws are ignored for the day but it stays family friendly.
People get into it and come in costume and sometimes dress their ducks. It is a riot.

Make sure to pick a good name for you duck it is a hilarious hearing it announced at the races. Bring blankets, warm clothes and a kennel or cardboard box if you plan on duck sitting I didn't one year and had to keep fishing Quackulon the Destroyer out of a storm drain [he] loved.
Anyone ever been? Sounds like a riot.

I went to the duck races last year. We left Omaha at 6:30 or some ungodly hour in the morning; took a bus down. They had trivia contests on the bus ride down and I won a plastic ring that featured a robot that boxed. I filled a thermos of bloody-mary which I enjoyed throughout the day. The duck races themselves are disturbing... people chasing these poor ducks down these fenced lanes on the tennis courts. There are some real die-hards who bring their own ducks. I found the mallards to be the best.

What time are you planning to leave Lincoln?

That looks way more entertaining than the cow chip throwing contests they hold back home in Tilden!

Oh, Adrian. I wish I could go. But I've got plans with some friends that are comming in from out of state. Sadly, we'll be nowhere near Avoca.

S, I think the Tilden community-event planning committee needs some fresh blood.

esovik, it sounds even more fun now that you describe how disturbing it is. :-(

I have owned the little bar in Avoca and have the past two Quack Off's. We have such a blast that day every year. I do have to say that the liquor laws are not ignored for the day but we found a way to work with them to keep everybody safe from overzealous law enforcement by simply surrounding the area with a fence and calling it a beer garden. It's still family friendly but now you can walk from the bar to the races with an open beer and nobody cares! It worked so well this year that we are going to put up the fence next year. Hope to see you there!

Are there T-shirts for sale for the Avoca duck races? Can you get them ahead of time or are they just available the day of the race?

It's great. If you're in the area when its going on I would defiantly advise attending.
